Westhaven is looking for a Designer to join our energetic core commercial team. This position provides high-quality renderings and PV layout including but not limited to understanding all usage needs and data and provides accurate shade analysis. Must be self-motivated, energetic, enthusiastic, detail oriented and must be able to handle detailed projects independently. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Our Commercial Designer is responsible for preparing layout drawings for solar installations, from simple to complex. You will work directly with our Commercial core team of Director, Project Manager, Sales, Engineering, and Project Coordination. You will also present designs to customers along with the commercial team. 
  • Design solar PV systems that are code compliant and meet customer expectations

  • Accompany Commercial Project Developers on site visits in early phases of solar sales process

  • Assist with required documentation for proposals and final deliverable

  • Conduct commercial site visits to determine specification of solar system size and specifications, roof structure, BOS and conduit locations, engineering, and electrical service requirements.

  • Use AutoCAD, Aurora, PV Sims, Energy Tool Base etc. to prepare site plans, layouts, mechanical racking and attachment plans, single-line electrical drawings, specification of BOS location and interconnection details.

  • Research, understand and communicate relevant permitting and development requirements that affect commercial solar PV system designs and the overall cost and viability of the project opportunities.

  • Develop specifications, collect data, and complete utility interconnection applications and building permit applications.

  • Work cross-functionally with sales, project management and installation teams to ensure  clients' needs and internal deadlines are met.

  • Site assessment and analysis both from on-site data collection and network tools

  • Provide content as needed for competitive RFP responses and sales proposals

  •  Help to ensure that all commercial construction/civil/land/technical standards are met in the solar project jurisdiction.

  • Assist in value engineering of our solar project portfolio based on performance-cost trade offs  and relevant optimization processes.

  •  Maintain technical expertise in current design technology and industry standards

  • Maintain an organizational structure that allows for efficiency and transparency

  • Perform additional duties as assigned and/or directed

Essential Duties & Qualifications:

  • BS in electrical engineering, structural engineering, construction management, or other related discipline.

  • A minimum of 2 years of solar photovoltaic design experience required.

  • 3+ years' experience working with AutoCAD with an understanding of layer control, dimensioning and scaling, sheet sets, blocks, xrefs, line weights, plot files, file transmission.

  • Ability to perform Aurora renderings a PLUS

  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret site and roof plans, section elevation, mounting and attachment system details.

  • Ability to communicate among construction, technical and non-technical personnel

  • An understanding of three-phase electrical systems

  • Experience in a commercial construction environment a PLUS

  • Working knowledge of ETB

  • NABCEP PV Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge or higher a PLUS

  • Solar Energy International Training a MAJOR PLUS

  • Detail oriented, thorough, with excellent planning, process, and project management skills.

  • Strong mathematical and quantitative skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.

  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word required

  • Regular, reliable and predictable attendance required

  • Periodic travel requirements for project related meetings

  • Excellent computing skills, including MS and Google applications, QuickBase and ETB  systems

  • Fanatic attention to detail, you know who you are!

Physical requirements:

  • Sit, stand or bend for extended periods of time

  • Be able to lift up to 30lbs

  • Look at a computer screen for extended periods of time

  • Repetitive use of hand and wrist using a keyboard, holding a pen/pencil and/or filing of documents
